Bourne Park was the venue for the Angels most promising performance of pre-season so far. The Blues comfortably brushed aside a stubborn Sittingbourne side thanks to goals from Jon Main, Drew Watkins and Robbie Kember.
There were five changes to the side that drew against Chatham Town on Saturday, mainly due to the poor state of the playing surface. Jon Heath, Alex O’Brien, Lew Watts and Scott Kinch all started in place of Mike Cramp, Scott Gooding, Steve Aris and Robbie Kember. A debut was handed to ex-Crystal Palace and Wales Under-21 International striker Andy Martin who replaced Ray Powell (calf strain).
The Angels started like a rocket straight from the off and duly took the lead after only 12 minutes. A mazy run from winger Fraser Logan brought about a needless challenge from a home defender in the penalty area allowing Jon Main to step up and convert the resultant spot-kick to put the visitors in front. Just 10 minutes later, the hosts were back in the game. A rare error from captain John Beales gifted nippy striker Kam Singh the opportunity when one-on-one with Aaron Kerr. He obliged and tucked away his strike with ease to take the sides into half-time even.
Jon Heath cleared off the line from a Kieran Marsh effort just after the interval before Drew Watkins scored his first goal in an Angels shirt on the hour mark. Jon Main was tugged down 30 yards out following a marvelous through ball from Luke Piscina. With free-kick specialist Tony Dolby off the pitch, it was Watkins who placed the ball down before curling a screamer into the top corner of the net. The changes were rung by both sides after this, as trialists and squad players were given a chance to impress. The game seemed to be petering out with the Angels in control until in injury time when Robbie Kember bagged his first for his new club. A ball in from substitute Tony Dolby found the unmarked Kember whose header was saved by the keeper. Fortunately for the former Crawley midfielder, the ball somehow managed to find its way back to him and he stroked home a left-footed drive.
Debutant Andy Martin scooped the reporter’s Man of the Match. His link up play with Jon Main looked very promising indeed and his ability to hold the ball up, flick on things and generally bring his team mates into play will certainly benefit the Angels this forthcoming season.
