The Angels bounced back from a humiliating defeat at the hands of neighbours Tunbridge Wells at the weekend by putting in a good performance against Conference South outfit Farnborough Town. Ray Powell grabbed the Angels goal to open the scoring in a game where the Angels looked much the better team for the majority of the 90 minutes.
Skipper Steve Aris returned from holiday to fill in at centre back alongside John Beales who was recalled to the starting eleven in place of Mike Cramp who dropped to the bench. Ray Powell was also promoted from the bench and replaced Luke Piscina. There was no place in the squad for Nick Barnes whilst promising youngster Danny Powell was handed a place amongst the substitutes for his debut.
Much like the Courier Cup fixture just a couple of days before, the Angels opened the scoring early on. This time it was Ray Powell who found the back of the net after Jon Main had chased down an under-hit back pass. The ball ricocheted to Powell who made no mistake in finding the gaping net. New signings Scott Gooding and Robbie Kember had opportunities on goal before the Conference South side showed their class by equalising just five minutes before the break. A great burst of pace from Russell Pym took him clear of the defence before unselfishly squaring to Bradley Garness who hit the back of the net to level things up at the interval.
Chances were few and far between during the second period but again, the Angels dominated proceedings. The new strike partnership of Luke Piscina and debutant Danny Powell were causing all sorts of problems, especially the latter with his skill, speed and trickery. Powell almost had a goal to show on his debut but goalkeeper Kevin Scriven was equal to it. One-time Angels target Richard Hodgson had the visitors’ best chance of the half but Aaron Kerr made a fantastic save to keep the central midfielder at bay. The game petered out and finished 1-1.
The reporter’s Man of the Match was given to Robbie Kember for his majestic display in the middle of the park. There were also promising displays from forwards Jon Main and Danny Powell which will surely please player manager Tony Dolby.
