Camberley Town Res 1-5 Tonbridge Angels Res
Saturday, 14 January, 2006
Suburban League Southern Division
On probably one of the worst playing surfaces in the League, Angels Reserves acquitted themselves well and came away worthy 5-1 winners against a poor Camberley side. With new signing Steve Ward from Tunbridge Wells making his debut and Leroy Huggins getting some much needed match fitness the Angels always looked the more likely winners. Kicking down the slope in the first half the early exchanges were even as both sides came to terms with the playing surface, but as the half wore on it was the visitors who looked the more likely to score, which eventually came about in the 16th minute. A magnificent run and cross from Terry Brock found the head of Phil Cramp whose powerful header was pushed against the post by the keeper but skipper for the day Mannie Neville was on hand to blast the ball home from close range.

Goal number two was soon to follow with Leroy Huggins netting from close range after more good work from Brock on the wing. Phil Cramp was unlucky not to have opened his scoring account when put through by Ponsford but the home keeper saved bravely at the forward's feet, Ward then had a shot that fizzed across the face of the goal and the keeper saved well from Huggins.

To be fair to Camberley they started the second half all guns blazing and reduced the arrears when Jones lifted his shot over Goldsmith from just inside the penalty area, Tonbridge's response was instant, from the kick-off Phil Cramp burst through a static defence to bury his shot past the keeper. From that moment on Angels controlled the game with the midfield trio of Neville, Stringer & Ponsford dictating play. Neville grabbed his second goal of the match with a close range effort at the far post, then with ten minutes remaining Tommy Reeves sidefooted home from six yards following a mazy run by another new signing Garfield Whyte to complete the scoring.

Manager's Comments: "A well deserved three points played on a very poor playing surface, Steve Ward looks to be a good signing but just needs to get some games under his belt. After the Folkestone game this could have been a potential banana skin but our approach to the game was spot on. Leroy did 75-80 minutes and is looking sharp and deserved his goal."
