Three Bridges Res 3-2 Tonbridge Angels Res
Tuesday, 20 December, 2005
Suburban League Southern Division
Despite two goals from midfielder Danny Lye, Angels Reserves returned from Three Bridges without anything to show from a good performance. The game itself was good to watch, but spoiled by a very poor standard of officialdom which saw six Angels players and one Three Bridges player yellow-carded, a penalty awarded to the home side on the stroke of half-time and Angels having a 'stone-wall' penalty turned down midway through the second half.

Both sides took a while to settle down and it was the home side taking the lead after 15 minutes, Three Bridges' centre-forward slotting the ball past Goldsmith, despite looking a good yard offside with the linesman at the time at least two yards behind play! To their credit the Angels bounced back quickly with Danny Lye firing home from close range after recovering from being 'pole-axed' by home keeper Mark Fox, Lye recovered and slammed the ball home, if the player had not scored the referee would have had no choice but to award the penalty kick and would probably have red-carded Fox.

With Piscina and Powell busy up front and the visitors back-four settled it looked like Tonbridge would go on and win the game particularly after Lye scored his second goal of the game, heading home from close range following Richard Ponsford's corner-kick. In the final 15 minutes of the half the home side came more into the game and Goldsmith made two good saves before right on the stroke of half-time Three Bridges were awarded a penalty kick after Mike Cramp had allegedly fouled a Three Bridges player. Goldsmith got a hand to the kick but could not prevent it going in.

Three Bridges started the second half the better of the two sides, Goldsmith saving well on a couple of occassions whilst at the other end Powell brought the best out of Fox and two rasping drives from Piscina warmed the keeper's hands. Three Bridges went in front twenty minutes into the half, a free kick on the edge of the box was deflected past Goldsmith and into the net.

Tom Reeves came on for Jon Heath as the visitors tried to get something from the game and the forward was unlucky heading Manny Neville's knock back just wide, then with 15 minutes remaining Danny Powell was fouled well inside the penalty area but the referee in his wisdom waved away the claims for a spot kick. As the game went into the final few minutes both sides had good chances but the home side hung on for the three points and retained their unbeaten run, having not lost in any competition so far this season.

Manager's Comments: "Officials do not win or lose you games over 90 minutes, but they can have a massive influence on how things turn out, today's certanly had that influence. Their first goal was a good yard or so offside and as for the foul on Powell for our penalty claim it was as clear cut as you will see this season but it was not to be. The most important thing was that Cramp, Lye, Piscina and Ponsford all got 90 minutes football which they all needed before the upcoming senior games over the holiday period. For the record I took Jon Heath off because of a tight hamstring but it is not a problem."
