With the second leg of this League Cup encounter to come in two weeks time Angels have left themselves a mountain to climb as a goal in each half put the visitors in the driving seat.
After a shaky start the Angels settled down and played some neat football but lacked the 'killer' pass as the home rarely troubled the very impressive Simon Lockwood in the Horley goal. Horley opened the scoring midway through the half as a ball was played deep into the penalty area and dropped kindly to an unmarked Mark Gilbert whose shot flew past Goldsmith and into the net via the post.
Tonbridge continued to huff and puff, Matt Scutter rounding the keeper but being forced out wide by the defender before his ball was cleared as he tried to find the unmarked Cramp, shots from Sinclair and Parkes going wide of the target and Phil Cramp bringing a good save from Lockwood just before the end of the half were all the home team could offer.
The Angels started the second half the brighter of the two sides but were unable to penetrate the visitors defence and Lockwood's superb ability to deal with crosses into the box was a major factor in the visitors not conceding a goal. Horley's second and possibly decisive second goal came 15 minutes from time, Toby Gilbert eluding the challenges of central defender Chris Holmes to lob the ball over Goldsmith in the home goal to wrap up the scoring.
