Tonbridge Angels Reserves 7-0 Godalming & Guildford
Saturday, 7 May, 2005
Suburban League Southern Division
A great way for the Reserves to end their season by finishing in 6th place with a seven goal demolition of a side that beat us 3-1 earlier in the season. However, the big story of the day was the debut of a major new talent for the club in the form of super striker Paul Dainty, more of that later. The first half was only 6 minutes old when Ant Goodwin crossed and Joe Fuller thumped in from close range. A similar goal 10 minutes later after one of 5 assists during the afternoon from Karl Smith saw Joe Fuller once again finish from close in. It was pretty much one way traffic all the way as the third was scored on 28 minutes. This time a ball was half cleared out to John Heath who moved past two players and hit a right foot shot from the edge of the area that flew into the top corner to make it 3-0. 5 minutes later and once more Karl Smith’s shot was well saved by the keeper only for Joe Fuller to follow up and net from an acute angle for his hat-trick. In between the 4th and 5th goals Karl Smith beat the keeper and somehow managed to hit the Godalming player on the line to deny him a goal he richly deserved.

The second half was once more one way and it was a big surprise that the Angels did not add to the scoreline until well into the second half. But on 65 minutes Joe Fuller was bought down in the area for a penalty. We immediately made the substitution and put Paul Dainty on the pitch to take the penalty. Despite striking the ball with venom the keeper made an amazing save to keep the ball out. 5 minutes later and a Paul Dainty back-heel let in Matt Seldon to score the 5th goal with a well taken shot from around the penalty spot. Then the keeper miss-kicked a goal kick straight to Paul Dainty who controlled and volleyed the ball in one fluid movement only to see his 35 yard shot hit the base of the post with the keeper completely beaten. Then with 5 minutes to go came the moment, Karl Smith sprang the offside trap and advanced on goal, drew the keeper and laid on an inch perfect pass for Paul Dainty to slide in his first competitive goal for the club to make it 6-0. Yet another Karl Smith assist let in Ant Goodwin to lob the keeper in the 90th minute for the final goal of an eventful season that saw the Reserve side recover from a slow start to the season to eventually finish 6th in the league and narrowly miss out in the Kent Intermediate Cup Final against Dover, who also won the league.
