A lethargic first half performance from the Angels was enough to give Cray maximum points at Hayes Lane on bank holiday Monday. An own goal from Danny Lye early on set the tone and a second from classy midfielder Jamie Kempster gave the visitors too much of an uphill struggle during the second period.
Mike Cramp made his first league start of the season to replace the injured Drew Watkins whilst tough-tackling midfielder Alex O’Brien came in for Lew Watts.
The Angels got off to the worst possible start by conceding a soft own goal as early as the 3rd minute. Michael Power’s deep cross picked out David Hall who volleyed against the unfortunate Danny Lye and ricocheted into the net past Jerome John. Cray then doubled their lead midway through the first half as a Ross Lover set-piece found the unmarked Jamie Kempster who hit the back of the net with the aid of the upright. The visitors were struggling to make an impact in the middle of the park where Lover and Kempster were winning everything in sight. However, the Angels held on and the score remained 2-0 at the break.
Following a half-time rollicking from boss Tony Dolby, the Angels took to the field a bit more fired up and could have sneaked a goal back immediately after the restart. A Jay May header flew narrowly wide of the hosts goal. Ray Powell created a brilliant solo effort on the hour mark but his rifled shot was comfortably caught by keeper Northwood. Danny Lye was next to try his luck but again found the impressive Northwood in irresistible form, tipping wide for a corner. Ex-Cray strikers Steve Sodje and Jon Main were both introduced late on but by this time the game had slipped away and it was too little too late. Main had a tame effort on goal easily saved and Sodje fared no better when through one-on-one. Tonbridge did manage to find the back of the net but Fraser Logan saw his curling free-kick ruled out for a shove on the goalkeeper by Danny Lye. Despite the pressure from the visitors, Cray were able to see out the game and claim maximum points, denting the Angels automatic promotion prospects.
The Angels Man of the Match Award was claimed by Ray Powell for a second consecutive match for his commitment and work-ethic. Luke Piscina also had a lively game.
