A late winner from substitute Jay May clinched a 2-1 win and ensured Tonbridge go through to the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy. The striker pounced in the area on 87 minutes to head home Tony Dolby's corner after the Islanders had pegged back the Angels' early lead.
Tonbridge took the lead after 11 minutes with Ray Powell pouncing on a defensive error to blast past Newport goalkeeper Joe McCormack from close range. Port hauled the score back to level terms on 23 minutes courtesy of a Lew Watts own goal. Phillip Archbold danced around the Angels defence on a run down the left, and Watts could only divert Archbold's low cross into his own net. The hosts had to settle for a 1-1 half-time score after Dolby saw his dipping volley crash against the crossbar on 44 minutes.
Tonbridge began the second-half by laying siege to the visitors' goal, John Beales having a header acrobatically tipped over the bar and Dolby's curled effort from the narrowest of angles being parried away by McCormack, but the match looked to be petering out to a draw until May's late winner clinched victory.
