Tonbridge Angels v Tooting & Mitcham United
Saturday, 4 February, 2006
Ryman League Division One
On Saturday, the Angels will look to improve upon their goalless draw at Bashley by picking up maximum points against another playoff hopeful in the shape of Leatherhead. Both sides picked up just the solitary point last weekend, with Leatherhead also managing a 0-0 draw away at Kent neighbours Ashford Town. The two teams have only previously met on two occasions, with each side winning a game apiece. Our visitors won the reverse fixture back in October 4-1 whilst the Angels picked up a slender 1-0 victory in the FA Cup tie back in 1996/97 season. ‘The Tanners’ completely outclassed Tonbridge earlier on in the campaign, and duly romped home winners with goals coming from Mark Smith, Dave Stevens, Scott Bennetts and Warren Waugh.

Our opponents currently sit in 8th position, just two spots and a single point from the playoffs. They impressed by defeating Chatham Town and Hampton & Richmond Borough in this seasons’ FA Cup competition before finally losing bravely to Farnborough Town 2-0. East Thurrock Utd were their conquerors in The FA Trophy, losing by the single goal in 1st Qualifying Round. Slough Town ended their Westview Cup hopes whilst they are still looking for glory in Surrey Senior Cup following wins against Beckenham Town and Dulwich Hamlet. They now face Kingstonian in the quarter-finals.

STAR MAN – Dave Stevens
Despite his age, Dave is an experienced striker who was once involved in a £35,000 transfer when he joined then Conference side Hayes as a replacement for now Wigan striker Jason Roberts. Started his career with Crystal Palace and then played for Bromley and Dulwich Hamlet, where his goals caused attention, evoking the move to Hayes in 2000. Spells back at Dulwich, then Crawley Town, Bognor Regis Town, Lewes and Carshalton Athletic then followed before he joined Whyteleafe in January 2004, transferring to Leatherhead six months later. Currently the clubs’ leading goalscorer this season.
