On Saturday, The Blues host Ryman Premier Division outfit East Thurrock Utd in The FA Trophy. This is the very first time the two sides have met in any competition. Our visitors currently lie in a mid-table position, having amounted 23 points from their opening 18 fixtures, since gaining promotion from Southern League Division 1 East last season. They are on somewhat of a slump currently, having lost their previous three games to Leyton, Staines Town and Hampton & Richmond Borough. The Essex side lost surprisingly at home to Harrow Borough in 1st Qualifying Round of this season’s FA Cup. They got to this stage of The FA Trophy by comfortably dispatching of Leatherhead and Leyton. They recently got hammered by seven goals in The Essex Senior Cup to a classy Thurrock outfit and were also knocked out of The Westview Cup.
STAR MAN – Steve West (Striker – Aged 33): Steve arrived at Dagenham & Redbridge from Woking on a two-year contract in February 2002 but then made a surprise big money move to Hornchurch in 2003. However, following the collapse of the Urchins in November 2004, he moved to Grays Athletic. Had joined the Cards as a powerful centre forward, for a club record fee of £35,000 from Enfield in September 1997 where he had been the leading scorer. Prior to that he was playing junior league football in Essex. Woking converted him into a commanding defender and team captain where he won their player of the year award, although he returned to his striking role at Dagenham. He made his England semi-professional international debut against Wales in May 2002. Transferred to East Thurrock united in July 2005 after helping Grays to win the Nationwide South title and the FA Trophy Final.
