Boss says his Angels can fly
Tonbridge will field a new-look side when they kick-off the Dr Martens League Eastern Division season at Fleet Town tomorrow (Saturday).

Manager Alan Walker, the former Gillingham and Millwall defender, has been particularly active in the close season, luring a host of fresh faces to the Angel Ground.

Perhaps the best known is prolific scoring striker Steve Portway, who was with Walker when he was manager at Fisher and has also played for Gravesend, Purfleet and Chelmsford.

Portway, 33, scored a hat-trick in the 4-0 Courier Cup trouncing of Tunbridge Wells last Tuesday and, according to Walker, is a 20-odd goal a season man.

But another notable signing, goalkeeper Mick Salmon, will miss the game at newly-promoted Fleet because of a serious knee problem.

The former Charlton man suffered the injury after colliding with Steve Clarke against Tunbridge Wells and could be out for weeks or even months. "It's a massive blow," said Walker.

Fortunately, the club have an able deputy in Canadian under-18 keeper Alan Lewis, 24. He will fill the breach, providing international clearance comes through in time.

Others in the squad are defender Michael Azzapardi, 22, who was with Conference side Margate last season, and on loan Gillingham central defender Dean Beckwith, 19.

Scott Saunders, Lloyd Hume and Peter Overton were with Walker when he was manager of Sittingbourne.

Despite Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Folkestone, when the Angels defended badly, Walker is pleased with the displays in pre-season friendlies.

"We have been able to try out a number of players in different formations," he said. "Most pleasing of all they are very fit."

Walker is confident the Angels will make an impression this season, but is still looking to strengthen the side in a number of positions.

Tonbridge, who finished fourth from bottom last season, play their first home game on Tuesday against St Leonards when Walker is expecting all three points.

Tomorrow's squad: Lewis, Azzapardi, Saunders, Hume, Cooke, Beckwith, Ainsworth, Roser, Overton, Kedwell, Portway, Barnes, Cass, Royston, Wash, Allman.
