What the majority, yes majority, object to is not the individual swearing but the orchestrated chanting of obsenities. Face it, it's not clever, it's juvenile & puts the club in a bad light. It's no good saying other clubs are worse, we should be leading.
The point of if Nick is right or wrong , in publisising the problem, is irrelevent, the people who are responsible have brought it on themselves ignoring Nick's previous appeals.
If they behaved in such a manner in the High St, plod, assuming you could find one, would arrest them for public order offences

1) Nick says a completely different thing to all the peoples faces.
2) No you wouldnt, go down Tonbridge High St today and you will still hear it. Go to schools and its 50 times worse.

The above point saying it doesn't matter if Nick is right or wrong is nonsense. There is no reason why this has to be front page news on the town's newspaper, especially when we have had a poor start to the season and admission prices have gone up 25%. It's a PR disaster. We're not a big club and pretty much everybody knows everybody else down at Longmead, if not personally then at least by sight. We all know who chants songs with swear words. Personally I think they create a good atmosphere. But if the club disagree they know exactly who they are. Perhaps a quiet word on a 1 to 1 basis would get a positive response rather than growly headlines that the entire town will see even if they don't buy the paper.

Of course there is always the chance that the journalist has rather sensationalised things and Nick himself has been misqouted or his words misinterpreted. Having only seen the headline and not read the article it's difficult to comment. Either way it's an embarrasing day for the club.

having spotted the article in the newsagent i bought the courier today and have to say i was shocked at the view taken by the club ,i have been attending angels games since 1975 and i can remember the bad old days of kent league football, ihave to say this is where we will end up if we alienate many more fans ,the club have to accept that swearing will continue at football grounds and although i stand behind the goal and join in with some of the chants i do not agree with the constant abuse of injured players/referees and linesmen(sorry assistant referees)at the end of theday people go to the game to let off steam and will occasionally swear, but the ground would be a very quiet place if it were not for the efforts of the barmy army

so this must rank as one of the biggest PR blunders of all time. What was Nick thinking??
 Angry
despite the desire for a stronger stance on the swearing, i wouldnt think the club would have supported a front page story of this nature.
put it down to gutter press sensationalism plus a lack af any other news worthy of the front page.
damage done. it will be interesting to see how this translates to the numbers through the turnstiles.

As I said near the start of the thread pete... it's a smokescreen.

Does anyone seriously believe Nick is bothered about swearing? If the club really wanted to do something about swearing then we would have stewards standing behind the goal with us dishing out warnings - I don't think I've seen a single steward standing with home fans since the north and south stands were built 8 years ago. The article seems to just be a way of pandering to those who have complained rather than actively doing anything about it.

At the same time it is a convenient cover up for the obvious failings on the field - his media statements have been blaming supporters for the team's performance since before the season even started! No one has been allowed to criticise (or offer a realistic opinion) without being told to "get behind Tommy and the lads". Perhaps a more sensible idea would have been to refrain from the over-hyped promotion talk, which has been proved to be hot air for a second season running.

and whats this about stewards not being able to eject anyone? they do at other grounds, again after we pointed out that the Tingtong fan was allowed to get on the pitch 3 times nothing was said

of course there is a saying that says there is no such thing as bad publicity.

this front pager put the angels in the minds of the whole courier readership, not just those who turn to the back pages.

we may even get an addtitional 20% support on tuesday  Evil

Front page... no need whatsoever... will have an adverse effect for sure... not thought that one through...

Is the swearing that bad... nope, go to White Hart Lane or Wembley, you'll soon change ya mind... never hear racism or the 'c' word...

Stewards... another kop out because they didn't throw the Tooting blokee out...

100% agree with Dan on this one... just a smokescreen for the poor performances, which everyone's forgotten about...

QUESTION EVERYONE IS NOW ASKING... IS IT ALL WORTH IT?? Lips Sealed

Nick will probably be nice as pie tomorrow... tell us to get behind the lads when it all goes quiet... double standards or what!
