I don't feel particularly strongly about this as I'm one of the people who stand behind the goal therefore probably wont be effected by it (unless they charge to stand). I do think though there are enough creative ways of reducing the cost to sit if the club implement charging to sit.
1) They could sell a season ticket for the seats, for example pay up front for the seats and pay half the price (21 games x 50p = £10.50 up front at the start and that guarantees you seating throughout the season).
2) Kids sit free with a paying adult.
3) As Mike said, sit for free with a programme.
4) Cheaper to sit if your an oap / child.

I feel very sad to hear about these plans to charge people to sit in the west stand, personally I feel like its an end of an era, and I will explain why:
The same way that there is a 'mini-community' that stands behind the goals there is a different 'mini-community' that always sit in the stands. People have their favourite seats, sit near the same people and throughout the season get to know eachother quite well. The combination of increased entrance fee plus seat fee will I fear put an end to this mini-community the way it is at the moment.
As Jammy mentioned I am always a little annoyed to turn up at an away ground where you do have to pay extra to sit down, and we often say on our travels; "this place isn't a home like longmead". However plans to charge people extra to sit down feels like a step away from the 'family and community' club that I am so proud to support.
I dont think comments like "you should watch footy standing up" and "its only an extra 3 quid per game" are very understanding.
However its great to hear the creative ideas for solving this problem. Personally I think the idea of buying a programme enabling you to sit in the stand for free is an excellent idea!! This will perhaps encourage those who dont usually buy a programme to try it, thus reading about other aspects of the club. Also those who do usually buy a programme it may give them an incentive to try the new seating area, because as someone already mentioned it would be a shame for it not to be used.
As a programme contributor I did fear that programme sales would go down next season, simply because people will no longer have the £2 change in their hand if they had paid with a £10 note to come in.
Instead of just those that sit down (either through choice or disability) having to help fund these new seats wouldnt it be nice if every fan could have the choice to contribute, as people quite rightly keep pointing out it is for the ground grading requirements and good of the team. Perhaps by 'sponsoring a seat' fans could pay a certain amount for the season (maybe £15-£20) to have their name or company logo fixed to the back of the seats. A similar idea has been used in the past on brick-built stands with fans buying bricks.

I am very disappointed to hear about the club thinking about charging to sit down. As others have mentioned any club we visit goes down in my estimation if they charge to sit down. Recently I have been aware of more families sitting in the stand. Parents know that their children are less likely to hear verbal abuse and swearing here, what a shame if we put families off attending because of the cost. I don't know how many people who post here have families but I know we could not attend as many matches as we would have liked when we had to pay for 2 adults and 3 children to get in. Fortunately they can pay for themselves now but many families are on a limited income.
