Scally getting sued - shame
« on: Thursday, 13 March, 2008, 12:19.19 »

A referee is threatening to sue Gills chairman Paul Scally for defamation of character after being handed a year-long ban from the Priestfield Stadium.

Former Gillingham Ladies manager Darren Keating, 41, is due to consult with solicitors today in a bid to clear his name.

Mr Keating, who is a qualified Kent League referee with 14 years of experience with the whistle, said he was worried the ban would have “serious implications” for his future in the game and could prevent him from taking charge of Football League fixtures next season.

He said: “Mr Scally has jumped the gun big time and I’m not prepared for him to ban me for something I’ve not done.

“This could affect my progress as a referee and so I’ve had to put it in the hands of the solicitors to deal with.”

The accounts manager from Chatham was hit with the ban after allegedly berating a 15-year-old official for his time-keeping at an under-16 game between Gillingham Girls and their Chelsea counterparts last month while posing as a Gills FC official.

In a letter banning Mr Keating from the League One club’s premises and activities, Mr Scally said: “It is reported that you confronted the referee both on the pitch at half-time and in the changing room after the match, and berated him over his time-keeping for the game.

“At the time you were wearing a replica Gillingham FC tracksuit, marked with your initials, and implied you were in some way connected with the club.

“The fact the referee was left with the impression you were connected to the club has cast a slur on the good name of Gillingham FC, which I am not prepared to tolerate.”

Mr Keating denies all the charges and said: “I can prove I did nothing wrong as I have parents who witnessed that the only time I spoke to the referee was at half-time and that was only to offer him a drink.

“I’m sure it’s a case of mistaken identity. The Kent County Football Association have withdrawn the charge as they have no jurisdiction over centre of excellence games.

“I’m told they have forwarded the issue on to the Amateur Football Alliance, but I’ve had no correspondence from them.

“I’ve tried to contact Mr Scally direct but had no response. His claim of bringing the club into disrepute is farcical.

“It’s got to the stage where I’ve had to bring a civil case against him, but I would be quite amicable if he made a public apology to me and dropped the ban.

“The matter would then be closed.”

When contacted by Yourmedway Mr Scally said: “I’m not interested in talking about Darren Keating.”
