Being a member of the england fans I thought I would see what other members thought to try and get a wider range of opinions (are we still allowed those on here?). Bearing in mind there are over 25000 members and contain men, women and children, young and old and supporters of non league to premiership the verdict was pretty much as this:
This was my post:
Just wondered what people's views were on swearing at Football? Is it acceptable or not? Is there a line when it gets too much? What about chanting with swearing?
There is a big debate about it at the moment at Tonbridge so just wanted to get a wider range of opinions from people across football from premiership down to non league supporters.
Responses:
Personally have no problem with swearing at football, a lot of which was why I enjoyed football so much when I was a kid. The chance to shout and swear at the top of your voice and it be up to a point completely acceptable. When I was a kid this was fascinating, its what I grew up with so for me its harmless. Some people will claim though that football is becoming a family environment and such behaviour is becoming more unnaceptable. If this trend continues we will all be rooted to our seats clapping politely and occasionally hooting some dreadful airhorn, completely removed from the game infront of us.
Anyway rant over.

My nine year old's been subject to the Holte End's use of the English language since he was three. He has acknowledged that my choice of words is very different at home (most of the time ) than it is at the match. He is less likely to react when he hears naughty name calling at school which is prevalent amongst his piers.

Got to say I agree with you there Edward
My twelve year old has been going to the football since about the age of four and has learnt a whole host of swear words and chants including swear words, but has NEVER brought it home and used it!

There are hundreds of places where you would not shout the F*** or the C*** word because they are obscene and cause great offence so we just have to remove those two words from our chants. There's enough left in our vocabulary to wind up, support the team, slate the ref. or whatever. We don't want people kicked out but we do want the clubs reputation to be a good one.....don't we ? The future sounds promising based on the bits I've heard from the discussions during the week....watch out Folkestone !
