presumably this clampdown by the police will also involve any players who swear incessantly or bait the home crowd....I think not !

...and that brings me on to a question which I completely forgot to ask last night... do Nick and Tommy think the language is worse on the pitch or off the pitch?

maybe we should see what it's like with the police around before condemning the idea

That is a fair point, hopefully they will never feel the need to throw anyone out.

Also the bit about people on the forum getting barred I am sure will only apply to those who regularly make inappropriate comments and that constructive criticism and the odd expression of frustration won't be an issue.

Cant remember if mccartney put this bit in the article but...

If you are thrown out by the police from one game, you are banned for the remainder of the season and your case will then be looked at in close season to whether you are allowed back in next season.

imo thats harsh, one strike and your gone for the season?

what powers would the police have for ejecting people? and what powers do the club have for banning people? Can either of these things happen just for swearing?

if somebody in the street was shouting abuse at another person you would find it unacceptable, and it may well be a criminal offence under the public order act. these standards and laws still apply when you are in a football ground.

so while you shouldn't be ejected for swearing casually in conversation you may get in trouble for shouting insults in an aggressive manner at someone else, be it the ref or whoever

I missed the Horsham game which seems to have been the catalyst for this, certainly the final straw as far as Nick was concerned, or so it seemed with his comments last night. Since then it does seem that the message has got through anyway, at Wimbledon on Saturday I thought the behaviour was exemplary and even controlled when their Number 2 decided to launch Kirk Watts into the car park.
