Having a big stupid mascot is great..for 'family' clubs. This idea has been mentioned on a few occasions and I, infact looked into it a bit. My findings:

  • The price of one of those things is very high as there are few specialist suppliers.
  • We'd have to find someone prepared to risk dehydration and constant ridicule..
  • Can you imagine how much that costume stinks?
  • Very few kids (or people who would appreciate it) come to games regularly.
  • The outlay for buying the costume, I doubt, would encourage the family demographic for the money to be recouped.
  • Funding - Supporters assoc. has more pertinent outlays.
  • A big-headed angel in the style of captain blade for Sheffield Utd would scare the bejeezus out of people.

However, if anyone would like to apply for the role of mascot, bank roll the whole thing and generally suffer abuse regularly whilst sweating like a pig..then please do so  Wink

I totally agree with you Jammy.  Afro

So we will have to hire that llama instead, it is definitely a lot cheaper & the kiddies might actually like the thing (I don't think that any kid has ever likes those silly mascots)

it could also help with the lawn mowing & create the basis for some fertiliser for the pitch (llama dung being very suitable for composting unlike monkey dung)

by far the worst was that rat with wings thing they had at chelmsford + they had a particularly dopey looking dog

the only entertainment these things ever provide is when they have punch up with each other

i didn't really notice it, not as annoying as the chelmsford one

Haydon drags round a wheelie bin and constantly slams the lid in front of the main stand trying to get them to sing or shout. This is often fruitless and results in even more fervent slamming. I for one found him quite annoying when I sat in the main stand, and he get's in the way.

Most other mascot's I've seen..Chelmsford/Hastings/Thamesmead etc. Weren't that interactive and therefore probably not such a draw for kids.

They do exude a magnetisim for a punch though don't they?
