Why 23 teams in our league?

I've only just noticed that there are 23 teams in the league! Why is this? Sorry if it's already been explained elsewhere.

But that doesn't explain why we have 23 teams and not 22...

This may not be 100% accurate as it is a few months back now (had a few beers in that time) but from what I remember the rules were that play-offs would whittle the number of promoted sides from Step 5 to eight teams - four into each of the leagues at our level (Step 4).

Ten teams were eligible for these play-offs until one team dropped out of the running leaving nine teams - rather than disappoint one out of the nine clubs the FA decided to scrap the play-offs and promoted all nine - it was our division that got the extra team.

Yes, sorry Africa Angel, i thought the links i gave you covered the answer you seeked succinctly - from memory. From a less drunken memory (Dan's) i believed it to be for geographical reasons and needing to squeeze the right amount of teams into the right leagues as feeders for the restructuring to work .  Huh

And it means that next season especially - the whole league will be opened up unrecognisably - i.e. teams that under normal promotion procedures would have had to have worked  thier way up through the divisions, over 2 - 3 seasons  could actually 'jump' a league or two and gain entry into our 'higher' division.

Hence our Chairmans comment's at the start of the season that we 'have to' gain promotion at the end of this season as it will become a 'Micky Mouse' league  Grin
