RYL side

Having a particular interest in the progress of last season’s U18 Welling United lads in their new clubs I get around the youth football scene at both league and representative levels and have attended the majority of Tonbridge Angels U18 Ryman Youth League side matches.
The RYL side is potentially one of the strongest sides I have seen in all my years of watching youth football, however, whilst the last 2 matches have seen wins the performances have lacked that something which was present particularly in the matches I saw against Staines and Gillingham which set me thinking about why that may be.
One thing I have noticed is that some of the squad are playing an awful lot of competitive matches with appearances in the reserves, the RYL, representative matches and presumably, unless they go to schools where egg chasing is the main sport, school matches on top of training sessions. This could go part of the way to explaining why that extra something hasn’t been there in the last couple of matches, some players may simply be tired.
It is difficult to curb the enthusiasm of players who no doubt see every game as a chance to be grabbed and managers will naturally want to play the best players available to them but I believe that overplaying, if this is the case, has potential for far worse than just tiredness and is potentially detrimental to future careers.
Am I being too critical?
Am I seeing something which does not exist?
I would be interested in the thoughts of any others who have been watching the team.

In answer to your comments I must say both the reserve and U18 management, together with the Chairman, are fully aware of the situation regarding the U18 Ryman League players.
For your information there were only two U18 who took part in the reserve fixture on Saturday and neither played a full game, if you were to see some of the reserve fixtures you would see the use of U18s is restricted.
Julian has a good relationship with the local grammar school regarding the use of players and spends a number of times discussing this issue.
As for the performances of the last two games, these were below par for the boys but this will happen, also the teams we were playing were a lower level and sometimes players react mentally different in these games.
We can assure you all that the boys welfare is always of the upmost importance to us at all times.

I take your point about playing teams from a lower level Mikel. What led to me wonder about the amount of competitive matches was the relative lack of pace and fight which had been so evident in previous matches.
I was aware that the RYL lads are used sparingly but, if the scoresheets reflect their contribution, very effectively in the reserve matches.
Its refreshing to hear that the Chairman takes an active interest in the U18's, the same can't be said for at least one other club I could mention.

Great debate gentlemen, looking forward to seeing their game tonight. Have seen them quite a bit this season but not recently as I struggle to get to their away games but they are a good side and the manager should take the credit for that. You will always have a problem with Youth football as the kids just want to play, I think everyone agrees they have to be looked after and I know the club will do this.
Good luck tonight boys.

Can't make tonight but hoping to make the Croydon game next week.
I look forward to hearing that the team remain unbeaten and are one step closer to a meeting with a league Club youth side - Gillingham would be nice.
