Dulwich Hamlet Chairman Martin Eede Stands Down

02.05.07

Dulwich Hamlet Chairman Martin Eede has decided to stand down this week. He said "I have made the decision to stand down as Chairman of Dulwich Hamlet Football Club. I have held the position for twelve years and have been very proud to do so. I have gained much personal satisfaction and enjoyment during a very challenging period for the club, but I feel now is the right moment for a change.

It would be very hard for me to describe how disappointed I feel at the failure to achieve promotion this year and in the previous few seasons. It makes it difficult to avoid the feeling that both the club and I would benefit from a change of direction.

I have received a very attractive offer from Fisher Athletic and I shall take up the position of Chairman in place of Eren Muduroglu and have to be totally honest and say I am looking forward to the new challenge. It would be disingenuous for me to say the offer has not focused me on the decision to stand down at Dulwich but I emphasise I feel a change will ultimately benefit Dulwich. The club has new ownership which is committed to football and this will ensure stability.

I joined the Club in 1995 at the invitation of the then owner Steve Dye who at the time was able to support the club financially and I was very happy to support Manager Frank Murphy and we came so close to achieving success. Steve Dye's financial support became necessarily reduced and Frank moved on to Hendon. We then entered a most difficult period when Steve Dye's plans to make Dulwich self-sufficient with a new ground were thwarted by Council red tape. The highlight of the period was Dave Garland's side appearing in the FA Cup first round, the first time for 50 years! Eventually as more investment was required in the club infrastructure (a new gym, etc.) we succumbed to relegation and at the invitation of Club colleagues I resumed as Manager of the Football Team, a role I had not performed for ten years at previous clubs. for two seasons we came close to regaining our Premier status even missing out in a playoff penalty shoot out, then winning the London Senior Cup a few days later. With hindsight I should have appointed a new manager then but with my own financial input I opted for stability and stayed a further year as manager. In the middle years of my Chairmanship it often seemed there were very few people who really cared about the Club and I found myself doing everything from cutting the grass to washing the kit. It now seems there are more than enough who have ideas on the right way forward. I want to thank all those who have genuinely supported me. I wish them and the mighty Hamlet future success".
