The problem with playing Barnesy wide right would be that he wouldn't be as effective. At the moment, he wants to be on the ball the whole time, creating space and chances for others. His playmaking role at the moment suits him. Yes, we could stick him out on the wing and I'm sure he would do well there but there is no replacement for Nick Barnes in the centre of the pitch.

I think we'll see Razor up front after the first few games. The only reason he is playing there at the moment is due to injuries to Crampy and Smudger. When they return, Razor would be free to move further up the park.

Have to disagree that Fleet played football though - all their defenders and midfielders could do was hoof the ball for their strikers to latch onto. That's not what I call football. Agreed, we couldn't test their keeper enough because the service wasn't up to standards. The wings are a problem but I thought Razor was effective on the right, bombing forward at every opportunity. Definitely the left-side is a worry - Roser and Hambley don't have any pace whatsoever. The former of the two is simply not good enough at the moment. I hope he proves me wrong and puts in some brilliant performance but from what I have witnessed during pre-season and this afternoon, it seems unlikely.

So what you're really saying is that we weren't very good and  that we need to improve on the right and left and that the midfield needs to create more for the non existent strikers.

Yeah I.ll go along with that.

Today, we weren't very good and things can only get better. I'm still quietly confident of success this forthcoming season. I think everyone would agree that the left-hand side is a problem - Jon Heath must come in for Bert for Tuesday.

The midfielders do need to create more. I heard Parkesy was carrying a slight dead leg, which would certainly count for his poor performance today. But give the lad a chance, he's only just turned 18!! Barnesy is the creative midfielder of the lot, and I think with Danny Lye beside him, we have two entirely different players and in some ways compliment each other. Danny gets stuck in and does the dirty jobs in front of the backline whilst Barnesy is free to roam around further up the pitch, doing what he does best - playmaking.

Parkesy is away for the next week or so (on England trials - good luck lads) so I guess we have no choice but to have a midfield of Barnes, Dobla and Hambley.

All in all, I'm not too worried about today's result. Yes, it was a dire performance but isn't it a sign of a good side when they can play that poorly and still claim a point?! I saw enough in the second half for me to believe we're going to have a promising season ahead of us..... Smiley

As others have stated it was a bad performance today.  As the season goes on I think we will find that Fleet are one of the poorer Teams in this league. The problems we have are in attack. We lack invention and pace in midfield so are unable to supply the forwards and we have some pretty average strikers at the Club. The goal should not blind people to the fact that Jay May had a terrible game His first touch is appalling. As for Haughton all I ask is why bother with 13 friendlies. He had an embarrassing pre season yet still gets selected. He reminds me of Steve Portway in that he came to us with a great scoring record but we signed him a year to late and he ends up wasting everybodies time.

I think we got very frustrated in the second half and lost our shape. Fleet had a couple of easy chances to kill off the game. We got out of jail today but changes need to be made.

The best strikers we have are Powell and Piscina. They are both in form and have good scoring records. Heath should start either in midfield or in place of Bert who continues to struggle.
