AFC Wimbledon - ePetition to the Sports Minister
« on: Tuesday, 06 March, 2007, 13:15.23 »

ePetition link: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/wimbledon/

Dear Friends,

"    The FA has recently imposed extraordinarily harsh penalties (£12,000 fine, expulsion from the FA Trophy and an 18 point deduction) on our club for an innocuous administrative oversight.  No unfair advantage was either sought or gained when we failed to realise that an International Clearance Certificate (ICC) was needed when we recently signed an English player from a club playing in the English League and participating in the English FA Cup.  The FA considered that the lack of an ICC meant the player was ‘ineligible’.

However, given these facts, you may yourself be wondering why an ICC was required at all.  The club in question was Cardiff City and, despite their full participation in English football, their players are registered with the Welsh FA.  When a player moves from the jurisdiction of one country’s FA to another, an ICC is needed to confirm that he has no outstanding bookings or suspension.

The player concerned is a very clean footballer so not only did he have no outstanding bookings or suspension but the lack of the required ICC only came to light when he received his first booking for us, by which time he had already played in 3 cup games and 11 league games.  Frustratingly, when we were made aware of the need to get an ICC, this took a total of one hour and 3 e-mails.

I hope that you too recognise the enormity of the injustice and the complete lack of any proportionality between ‘crime’ and punishment and feel able to support us in this matter."  http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/wimbledon/

with all due respect and i do realise how harsh it seems, making such a big point of appealing against this decision will only go against you. The F.A have only one realistic option now which is to keep the imposed penalty, as re-awarding you the money/trophy place/points, will -

a)show how little control they have over the game,
and b) Will have every other club appealing against every other decision, and there for ruining the credibility of the league table after each match, amongst other things,

thats only my opinion mind

as much as i think this case is harsh we will gain one place in the league if it goes through. That might be the difference between the play-offs or not. And if you dont think of it like that then we would get more prize money for finishing higher up the table.

But why??

They talk about 'injustice.' They made a mistake and are now paying for it. Fair and square. Smiley

If the outcome of this situation is that the rules are changed or clarified in future to give a fairer punishment then I have no problem with that. Personally I say move the five or six Welsh clubs playing in English leagues back to their own country's league.

However in this instance the rules were there for everyone to abide by, no matter how unfair they may appear, and AFCW's punishment should stand.

I might have been less harsh on them had it not been for the numerous conspiracy theories that some of their fans were circulating!

True... I feel sorry for Wimbledon fans though! It's not really their fault...
