Tunbridge Wells Vets v Tonbridge Angels Vets
« on: Friday, 20 October, 2006, 19:34.47 »

Don't forget to support George Piper's Centenial Match at Culverden Stadium on Sunday 22nd October at 11.00am. George is giving the entrance fee to Hospice in the Weald. Wells legends like John Wingate and Sean Carey will be playing, but who is in the Angels side?

Tonbridge fans will be delighted to know that George had a great reception at the Wells today, including a presentation from the FA. On the pitch it was very one sided: Tonbridge Vets 6 Tunbridge Wells 1. Terrible conditions, though, and full marks to all the players who turned out. They did themselves proud, and their 100% commitment and effort was appreciated by everyone. It was excellent to see them all again in action.

Has anyone got the full line ups and changes as I arrived after the announcement, if there was one.
Mark Freeman scored 2 in first half and I think the other was scored by Stevens (?)
Dave Arter scored a hat trick before Wells scored from an acute angle against change keeper Senchery (!)
It was a well contested match for an hour, but then the extra fitness / youth of the Angels counted.
Mark Freeman and Tony Dickson still looked better than many visiting players that we've seen at Longmead recently. Gary Aldous and Colin Blewden were much the same as usual, but half speed.
Special mention should be made of robust looking Wells sub Steve Clarke and Sir Mark Gilham, who appears to have been enjoying the good life since he retired.
It's a shame that more people didn't attend, I hope that they weren't put off by our announcement on Saturday.

John Wingate wasn't there and neither was the keeper whose last minute save at Ramsgate won the league for TW. Donde estas Guerro?

Sorry about the teams. They weren't on the notice board, and some us had a great job recognising some of them because of their "receding" (and I'm being polite!!) hairlines. From a Tunbridge Wells point of view, I was very disappointed not to have seen John Wingate, who apparently could not be contacted in time, and Sean Carey. Some of the "old" Tonbridge team were excellent and much fitter. Perhaps, the Spa water here ages us earlier?! In the years goneby, of course, none of us spectators have changed a bit, and we were just as we were 20 odd years ago!!! The weather was terrible, and unfortunately this affected the attendance. The Tunbridge Wells club, though, put on an excellent spread for George, and it was a great occasion. Looking at how fast he walks, start preparing for his 110th!! I think Tunbridge Wells Club still have some special commerative programmes left- £2 -all money goes to Hospice in the Weald. Best wishes.

So Toad, do you have the lineups?
By the way, I don't agree with what you said about the supporters, Keith Hayward looks younger than he did then and so does George, as I remember that he put on a bit of weight when he was in his 80s.
I would recommend the programme which had some very interesting photos of young George. Interesting for  people who know George, football fans and also people who like history.

Lo siento Stuart, pero estoy todavia en Espana.I'd love to come back at some time.Maybe when Dan finishes his book.By the sound of it i might even be considered slim compared to some of the guys. That night at Ramsgate was surreal. We had to win,and the game finished in almost total darkness.I remember making some desperate late saves(i always was better when i couldn't see)and getting the trophy. We all got hammered, and i decided to stay at a hotel in Ramsgate rather than risk the haul back to Brighton. One of my better decisions.Best regards.Paul.
