SYL U18's 1st Pre-season friendly.
« on: Wednesday, 09 August, 2006, 18:27.21 »

The SYL U18's had their first pre-season friendly last night going down three goals to one against Millwall U16's at the Millwall training ground in Downham. The score line flattered Millwall in the end, but it was testament to the younger sides well drilled discipline and sharper passing.

Millwall scored after five minutes with a excellent half volley strike from outside the box which left ex-Thamesmead Town U18 keeper Daniel Burke, on his début in the Tonbridge goal with no chance. With four new faces and a trialist in the side the lads from last years KYL U18's squad settled quickly and the first half turned into an entertaining game. Millwall never really threatened the Angels goal again and it was the Angels who should have scored next when another
ex-Thamesmead Town U18 debutant Michael Barker chose to try to lob the Millwall keeper from just outside the box, but just dolly dropped the ball into his hands.

At half time Daniel Burke was replaced by a keeper from Millwall as he had broke the little finger on his left hand midway through the half and will now be out for the first month of the season.

The second half didn't start much better than the first for the Angels when a bad defensive mistake after ten minutes gifted Millwall their second goal. Two goals down the Angels carried on matching their opponents, pushing for the break which came with five minutes to go when Michael Barker beat the Millwall keeper from just outside the box with a fierce dipping shot. Now well up for what would have been a deserved equaliser the Angels conceded another soft goal direct from the restart after yet another poor defensive error and that was it game over.

Top marks to the Millwall lads who were mainly two years younger and generally a lot smaller than the Angels lads, but their sharper passing and well drilled organisation saw them take the win. Slightly hard on the Angels, but even with the new faces and being rusty after their summer break there was enough on display to make me feel that things bode well for another successful season.

All players are last years U18 KYL Squad unless stated.
