Taken from the Braintree forum re last night's match abandoned as rumoured 22 players in mass brawl + and Borg alledged to be in the thick of it.
MATCH ABANDONED BIG FIGHT Both Chelmsford and Braintree fans that were there agreed the ref was awful. The actual abandonment was out of a comedy sketch. They were taking the nets down when they announced that the fans should wait as there were discussions between both Chairmen and the ref to get the match restarted.
Robbie was running down the line against a city player who was twice his size. The ball went out of play, Craig in his wisdom "aledgely" stuck out a leg and tripped up Robbie. Robbie got up and was pushed by a Chelmsford player/official (couldn't see who it was but it was right infront of the dugout). Robbie pushed back which happened to be Craig. Robbie disappeared in to a sea of claret tops and training tops.
The most of Braintree players ran over, a couple sensibly stayed away. There were a lot of handbags flying around the poor linesmen didn't know which fight to stop.
Robbie has a suspected broken nose and left the ground to get medical treatment after being seen by the on site medical staff. The players and their families had to be escorted from the ground to their cars. And it is was also heard at the ground that the Police will be taking statements from all the players. whether this is true who knows, it was something the stewards were saying.
All I can say is that there was no trouble whatsoever with the fans, who were in great spirits laughing and joking together during and after the match. It is a real shame tha what could have been a good match had to be prematurely ended. The players were willing to put it behind them and get on with playing football, shame the ref could be so gracious. If he felt that he had to send someone off but he didn't know, perhaps he should have said, both teams are all on a warning the next bad foul/retailiation and your off.
And to Chelmsford and their fans, a great ground, though it was a long, long wait, it was definately worth it.
I am sure there will be many versions, if my version upsets any Chelmsford fans I apologise, it was not written to upset, just my view of events from opposite the Chelmsford dugout.
For more angles on the incident the Isth is rife with it
