Newport IoW away back in 99, the Angels got a 3-0 hammering. Seen them a few times since, some excellent displays, some luke warm ones, the odd awful one. The Angels and me spend a lot of time apart but there is real love down there.

The first game I remember (but probably not the first I went to) was a Tuesday night against Maidstone in about 1979 or 1980, possibly a cup match, and a crowd of over 1000. I have no idea what the score was, but there was much singing of "We hate you more than Dover".

Can anyone fill in the blanks for me?

I think mine was about '78 against Dunstabubble, we won (I think) 2-0, mummy took me !  Don't know why either because she's not wot you'd call a diehard footy fan.  Dan can confirm the year and score as he's got all my early programmes.
Attended a few games at the Angel and then really caught the bug when we moved to Longmead, remember the first games there being in front of large crowds but as usual we didn't perform !
The most memorable season to date for me has to be 83/84 ( I think) when Keirs was in charge and Phil Emblen and Tony Dixon were at the back...so nearly got promoted and needed to beat Crawley something like 11-0 on the final day....Dave Braham scored his first ever goal....he made roadrunner look slow.

8)Hi.Paul Hubbard here.I played in goal behind Emblen & Dixon that day.We lost 3-2.I reckon maybe Eddie senchery was right-back,and maybe John Kiers left.We were really unlucky not to get promoted with a small squad and a tiny budget.Wonderful times though.Later that evening i was presented with the Austin Verini Trophy, which still sits in my trophy cabinet here in Spain. Is it still presented each year?I think i was the first to win it.I've only just caught up with this site, but if anyone remembers me drop me a line.

Hi Paul, I certainly do remember you, you saved the day on more than one occasion.  Are you still selling jewewllery HuhHuh!!
I think the trophy is still presented on a yearly basis, are you still in touch with any of the squad like Pete Churchill, Dixo, Phil Emblen (is still an active member of the club), etc.
Where r u based in Spain ?

Hi.Thanks for the reply.I tend to stick to wearing rather than selling jewelry now.Having worked for may years in the probation service in Brighton,i now work as a P.E. teacher on the Orihuela Costa is Spain.I"ve been here three years now with the wife and kids(same wife)and we love it here.I keep in touch with Phil, and Neil has a house out here.I've always looked out for the Angels results,as i had three great seasons there.A great win the other night v Worthing, and a promising start to the season. All the best Paul.

I too remember you Paul. Great bunch of players and characters when you were playing. Good to see that ex-players like to keep in touch with The Angels despite the passage of time. You're not far from me - we are about 10 miles west of Alicante near Agost, the pottery capital of Spain  Sad

8)Happy days.We all played for peanuts, and we had some good players. We also enjoyed each others company off the pitch(too much some would have said)I had some of the happiest times of my career at Tonbridge, and met some really nice people. One of my biggest mistakes ever was leaving to go to Hastings, but they offered me money and a job at a time when i needed it.Can't have regrets,i just remember the club and the people with great affection.Tony Booth was one of the best players i ever played with, but a lazy git.Gilly was superb,as were the older guys.John Kiers,Phil Stonebridge and Glenn Coupland. If you remember we didn't even have a reserve team or a youth team at that time. How did we ever manage to survive? As i say Happy Days.Take care.Paul.PS.How long have you been in Spain?

You're right about Boothy - he could either amaze or disappoint all the the space of a minute. On his day he was superb  Smiley

Gillham, Stonebridge, Kiers and Coupland - great Angels all!

We've been in Spain just about a year now. Love it and wouldn't go back, well just occasionally to get to Longmead! Travelled back especially for the Dover playoff final and will be there on 7 October and then Xmas/New Year.

8)I see that the Angels have won again today to make it three out of three.Good stuff.I've not been back to the UK since i moved here. Will have to at some time to remind me why i left.Have you had a crack at learning the lingo? My kids are fluent, and i'm not bad,but there are really too many Brits here.
Colin Blewden was another excellent player.Others i remember Bobby Dudman.Terry Cordice.John Hardwick(who i have bumped into many times due to his links with Crowborough)Nicky Sansom(who was well handy when we got into a fight with some skinheads after a match at Lewes).Dave Braham.Leroy Bess.Gary Aldous and the unforgettable Peter Churchill. What was Wiggy's real name and i can't remember the name of the big ginger lad who we called Basil for some reason.I think he may even have gone on to be Manager.Enjoy the sun.I'm going to put the Valencia match on the box. :police:Be lucky.Paul
