My first Angels game...
« on: Sunday, 05 February, 2006, 22:18.09 »

Something that was posted in another thread got me thinking, so I hope this thread will get a wide wide range of different forum members posting.

What was your first Angels game? What brought you to the match? Do you remember the game specifically or is it all a blur? Can you even remember which was your first game? And what kept you coming back to the Angel Ground/Longmead?

My answer is an FA Vase game against Beckenham Town in 1990. It is all a blur, having been eight years old at the time, and it was probably kentishman's idea to take me to see some footy.  Cheesy

I don't think seeing Tonbridge play really caught the attention of this fan until the following year, and the abandoned game with Hampton before the rematch and then the Yeovil game. Hooked from then on.  Cheesy

Sorry - being a usual forum member  Wink but.........

My first memory was from the early 70's, at the old Angel. My Dad taking my 3 brothers and me.No recollection of the match, just the blur of the crowd - obvioulsy from being so young at the time.  Wink

The first game i do remember was an All Stars, with Gordon Banks in goal!  Roll Eyes

1967 - vs Canterbury at the Angel.  We lost 1 - 2 & Johnny Saunders scored for Tonbridge, who scored first.  Harry Haslam was manager & l went as two schoolmates were supporting the Angels at that time.  They have long since disappeared but l've stuck it out !!

Another "twist" to this thread ?  Best ever Angels side l saw - the 1972/73 squad managed by John Gilchrist.

One of my co-supporters saw the very first game in 1948 vs Hastings.

26/12/2000 Angels 2-1 Sittingbourne. I remember a guy on Sittingbournes' side being booked twice but not being sent off. Good match in-front of a reasonable crowd

My first match was probably back in mid90's somewhere - I remember playing the likes of Spalding and Clevedon etc but it's all a blur.

I do remember though, my very first Barmy Army match, vs Chatham (a) 8th March 2003, won 2-1, Luke scored winner. Dan approached me and told me to join em and sing my heart out.....aint looked back since... Wink

Don't remember much of my first game watching Tonbridge. All I recall is that it was possibly an evening game (definately a floodlit game) and that a fella named Leroy Bess impressed me with his speed etc.
So it must have been 89-90 I guess.

My first Barmy Army match was the 1-0 win away to Chatham on 14th October 2003, and that was due to Mike Davis. Cheers mate!

Oh gawd here we go.

As its a while ago - allow me to be a bit hazy.

In 1964 my old man dragged me along to Tonbridge V Fulham which had to be a friendly I guess.

The strangest thing was it was the only thing my totally non sportiung Dad ever took me to.

IIRC George Cohen played fro Fulham but my abidng memory was of the Tonbridge goaile (sure it was Johhn y Bourne) playing like a man possessed. He became my fist football hero (sadly to be crocked by a dirty Merthyr player a few years later.
I started watching the blues and then joined the junior set up- the perk of which was we got to be ball boys and get in free.
So many players - as recalled in the legends section- I remember abusing Geoff truett one day and him ttunring round and telling me to f**k off. Phil Stonebridge was an absolute legend as was Crushy and so many more.

Around 73-74 I started playing local soccer on sats for Sports and Social (anyone remember the Barkers ?) then drifted in the 80s into motorcycle racing so Sats were gone.

Then along came kids and other stuff until a couple of years ago when Mike and I had nothing to do and almost 30 years on I completed the circle and took my son to his first Angels game. (Banbury I think)
The rest is history

Yes very harsh.
As far as i remember mine was veither RS SOUTHAMPTON OR BASINGSTOKE in 1983-84 at longmead all i remember is crowd was 700+ no hard standing no seats just the sleepers for terracing.
I have been going to football since 1966 when my dad to me to see Redhill v Fulham in friendly and Northampton away in div 1 same season was first league game so iam nearly as long in the tooth as pete HA !
