Braintree Town 2-0 Tonbridge Angels

Tuesday evening’s replay saw Tonbridge gracefully bow out of this seasons FA Cup competition to fellow Ryman Premier side Braintree Town. In a tight and close matched encounter, much like the previous two meetings this season, the home side came out on top thanks to goals in the 2nd half from James Baker and player, manager Gary Abbott.

Neither side really got off to a flying start with some very hesitant and cautious play. However, Braintree created the first half decent attempt on goal in the first half through Steve Sodje when his run and shot flew just wide of Jamie Turners left hand upright. Young starlet James Baker then had a cross/shot that rattled against the post, rebounding out for Tony Dolby to clear with ease. The Angels only chance came when Luke Piscina twisted and turned and had a snap shot at keeper, Danny Gay. His shot was weak and easily dealt with from the impressive shot stopper.

Baker finally broke the deadlock six minutes after the interval. Having battled his way through a string of challenges to the edge of the 18-yard box, his dipping volley was driven fiercely into the far left hand corner, leaving Turner absolutely stranded. It was his fourth goal in as many starts. Abbott doubled their advantage with a quarter of an hour remaining. The experienced striker broke free on the right, raced into the penalty area and coolly slotted the ball past the onrushing keeper into the far corner>

The reward for the Irons was just under £4000 in prize money and a 3rd Qualifying Round tie at home to another Kent club, in the form of Conference South side Margate on Saturday 16th October. Angels will look back upon this year’s keep run with immense disappointment as they know it was a massive chance to boost the club’s much needed financial position.
