Erith & Belvedere 0-2 Tonbridge Angels

Two first half goals from Brendan Cass and John Beales ensured the Angels’ first win of the new season, following Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Welling United.

However, it was the home side that made much the better start, with Richard Vercesi twice coming close to breaking the deadlock. This served as a wake up call for the visitors who then opened the scoring through prolific young striker Brendan Cass. A delightful chip over the defence allowed Cass to evade the offside trap to volley past the Erith goalkeeper.

New loan signing, Tim Hambley, showed a glimpse of the magic that catapulted him to the highest level of non-league football, when he represented the England National XI. A neat chip off the left foot onto his weaker right foot drifted inches wide of the right hand upright from 30 yards.

Five minutes prior to half time, a well-worked move involving Luke Piscina and Steve Searle resulted in the Angels doubling their lead, through defender John Beales. The quick short corner, caught the home defence napping, allowing Beales to sneak in unnoticed to slot home with his left foot, for his first senior goal. The second half somewhat lacked the creativity and flair of the first half, with substitutions taking precedence.
