Tuesday, 28th October, 2003: Dr Martens League Cup 1st Round.
Tonbridge Angels 0-3 Fisher Athletic
A makeshift Angels side were well beaten by Fisher, whose energetic and positive play gave them a deserved passage into the next round. Richard Brady bagged all three goals for the visitors.
Tonbridge started without six first team regulars (Barr, Larkin, Powell, Roser, Royston and Tydeman) and the resulting shuffle of positions gave the team a distinctly unfamiliar look, especially at the back. Peter Overton and John Beales were the central defenders, with Tony Dolby in his normal sweeper role. Keith Moore and Keiron Wilson picked up the wing-back duties.
Nick Barnes returned from suspension to start alongside Damien Hodge in midfield. Brendon Cass filled the link-up role behind the front two of Lynden Rowland and Luke Piscina. Hamid Barr, Ray Powell and Steve Searle were on the bench.
Fisher signalled their intentions from the start - attack directly and in numbers whenever they could. Terry Kahn, Brady and Daniel Hollington all went close before the Angels first real attack, Cass having his effort blocked after a neat 1-2 outside the box.
The visitors first came on 19 minutes. The ball fell to Brady after some shambolic defending and he beat Jamie Turner with a low drive from 15 yards. Barnes nearly levelled for the Angels with a 25-yard screamer which beat the diving 'keeper and the crossbar.
Tonbridge tinkered a bit more with the team and formation - Dolby joined Barnes in midfield after half an hour, with Hodge moving back into the sweeper role; then Barr came on for Rowland, freeing Cass to join Piscina up front. Brady and Steve Aris missed great chances for Fisher before the break, both after poor marking at corners.
Fisher went two up after 50 minutes when Brady picked up the ball ten yards inside the Tonbridge half, turned, and ran unchallenged through the middle to slot cleanly past Turner. Brady nearly scored again before Piscina brought the best out of visiting keeper Michael Holder midway through the half following good work from Barr and Dolby, but Fisher sealed the tie with just under 20 minutes left. More uncertain defending led to Brady being brought down by Turner, and he got up to convert the resulting penalty himself.
Powell went close and Piscina hit the post late on as Tonbridge went in search of a consolation.
There was no official Angels Man of the Match award for this game, but a hard-working and lively performance from Luke Piscina which always kept the Fisher defence honest was one of the few bright spots for Tonbridge.
