Tonbridge Angels 3-0 Stamford
Tonbridge continue to set a hot pace at the top after this comprehensive victory spoiled Stamford's perfect away record, and extended the Angels lead to 8 points on a warm and sunny day at Longmead.
Nick Barnes returned to the side after suspension, with John Beales the unlucky player to make way from the team which beat Dartford a week ago. Stamford fielded midweek signing Ian Edge up front.
Ray Powell and Lynden Rowland combined for the first move of note, Powell's quick turn and pass freeing Rowland who was eventually crowded out by the Daniels defence. Steve Searle's low drive was blocked by a defender before Stamford 'keeper Ludek Michalik pulled off the first of many good saves on what was to be a busy afternoon for him. Rowland's clever lay-off set up Barnes for a left foot shot which Michalik pushed round the post, Andy Larkin heding the resulting corner just over.
The Angels started to impose their authority on the game. Steve Searle missed a great chance to put them ahead on the half-hour, firing over from 12 yards after Powell had set up the opening. Michalik then just beat Powell to the ball after Tony Dolby's 20-yard drive was half-blocked by a defender. Stamford's Czech 'keeper saved three more Powell efforts in a frantic five minutes, and Stamford looked to have survived the first half - but it wasn't to be. Hamid Barr was brought down after a smart turn in the box in stoppage time, and got up to put the Angels 1-0 up from the spot.
The second half brought more of the same. Michalik was at full stretch to hold a Rowland header, then Rowland jabbed the ball wide after Barnes' mishit shot flew straight to him on the six-yard line. Stamford's first (and only) real threat came on 57 minutes, when Warren Donald's cross found Matt Green who had sneaked in behind the Angels defence. Jamie Turner was relieved to see Green head the chance wide.
Tonbridge continued to be well on top and Barr grabbed his second just after the hour, firing home the loose ball after Michalik had pulled off a double save from Rowland and Powell. It was almost three a minute later, Michalik denying Powell yet again and Barr's follow-up deflecting wide off a flailing Daniels defender. Brendon Cass and Peter Overton replaced Rowland and Searle in a double substitution before the Angels sealed the points with 15 minutes left. Barnes got to the byline and crossed for Cass to head beyond Michalik from close range.
The Daniels 'keeper was at full stretch again to fingertip a Ryan Royston thunderbolt round the post, as Tonbridge played out a dominant all-round team performance to the loud and appreciative accompaniment of the Blue Army.
Sam Tydeman took the Angels Man of the Match honours after another fine display as the midfield anchorman, but everyone played their part in this win.
