Fisher Athletic 3-7 Tonbridge Angels
Alan Walker kept his promise that Tonbridge would “deal out a hiding soon“ in style, as the Angels thrashed his old club Fisher Athletic 7-3.
Indeed you wouldn’t have forecast such a scoreline after just under three minutes, when a looping header sailed out of the reach of Jamie Turner and into the net to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead. It didn’t take long for the Angels to get back on level terms. Lynden Rowland towered above the home defence to meet Hamid Barr’s perfectly executed free-kick and direct the ball into the net to make it 1-1.
By the 11th minute the Angels had gone 2-1 up. Another set-piece as a corner was floated into the box (again by Barr), calls for a handball in the six-yard area by a Fisher defender were short-lived as Ryan Royston ended the debate by striking from close range. Tonbridge then went looking for that vital two-goal lead and came close on 15 minutes, Sam Tydeman releasing Royston on the left, whose short low cross was cleared just inches over the bar by Fisher’s Paul Lorraine.
Barr came close firing a low shot straight at goalkeeper Michael Holder, and the third goal didn’t come until the 39th minute. An inch-perfect through-ball, once again from Barr, left Ray Powell with only Holder to beat and Powell slotted home for his third goal of the season, and Tonbridge’s third of the match.
Fisher played some decent football, when they could get hold of the ball, but their defending was unable to cope with the free-flowing rapid attacks being thrown at them. Rowland headed wide from a corner just after the restart, and a Barr specialist free-kick was heading for the bottom corner until Holder’s save. Just after the hour it was 4-1. A free-kick (Barr again?) was sent out wide to the right, where Nick Barnes
aimed a header back into the box, Powell was first to it and struck firmly to confirm the Angels’ dominance.
A good attack from Fisher resulted in Craig Roser bringing down Taf Islam, the resulting free-kick was a well-worked set-piece which saw a drilled left-foot shot hit the back of the net for 4-2. Immediately Alan Walker made a double substitution, supersub Brendon Cass and Luke Piscina replacing Powell and Peter Overton. The results were remarkable. Within a minute, Cass made an impact, latching onto a Barr through-ball
to sidefoot past Holder to make it 5-2. Two minutes later Cass was on the edge of the box, his left-foot shot was blocked, but he kept his balance to somehow curl the rebound into the net with his right foot. Before the fans had stopped celebrating Lynden Rowland was put through on goal and made no mistake to fire the Angels into an ecstatic 7-2 lead. Can it be like this every week?
Fisher grabbed a consolation goal on 81 minutes, making it 7-3 after a mistake on the right, and that turned out to be the goal that kept Tonbridge off the top of the league. There was even still time for Hamid Barr to hit the post and Piscina to blaze the rebound over the bar! The result put the Angels second, and on the evidence of that performance it hopefully won’t be too long before Tonbridge climb that extra spot.
