Tuesday, 19 November, 2002: John Ullman Cup.
Ramsgate (U-18) 1-2 TAFC (U-18)
Tonbridge progresses to the next round of the John Ullman Cup at a blustery cold Southwood last night.
Ramsgate, who like ourselves had progressed to the 1st round of the AXA FA Youth Cup, presented formidable opposition and they took the lead after 7 minutes following a long ball over the Angels square looking defence. Drew Crush equalised with a close range header only a few minutes later.
Ramsgate lost the services of their goalkeeper halfway through the first half following a collision with Dan Hunwick. His replacement was in top form however, when he tipped a Charlie Hawks free kick over the bar. The game continued with Tonbridge trying to pass the ball about on the bumpy surface and the home side taking every opportunity to get the ball over the top of the Angels back four.
After 70 minutes, little Charlie Hawks, climbed like a pilchard to loop a peculiar header over the Rams keeper giving the Angels a 2-1 lead. Then some impressive personal performances from centre backs Patch Blackman and Max Jeffries with keeper Jamie Williams making a number of important saves allowed Tonbridge to secure the victory.
Ramsgate will rue a number of missed chances but Tonbridge always looked the more composed side.
