Wednesday, 4 September, 2002: Southern Youth League.
Crawley Town (U-18) 1-2 TAFC (U-18)
The U18s completed their third successive away win of the season last night (4th Sept) at much fancied Crawley. Centre-half Mike McKewan, son of former Angels reserve boss Mac McKewan, scored an unbelievable goal on 22 minutes. Latching on to a loose ball, and still within the center circle, the young defender smashed an incredibly powerful dipping shot fully 40yds into the roof of the net through the despairing home keepers fingertips. Crawley who operate an academy college scheme similar to our own PASE scheme were a tidy talented side and within the magnificent facilities of the Broadmead Stadium the game was a credit to both clubs and the Southern Youth League.

The immaculate pitch with a light dew allowed for a very fast game and it was Tonbridge who passed the ball better with Drew Crush in excellent form. Left back Jon Heath continues to show fantastic pace and technical ability combined with a real will to win and made several good covering tackles. In defense John Beales was again man of the match with an immaculate performance, it can only be a matter of time before he follows Paul Ainsworth into the senior squad. Only five minutes into the second half Tonbridge increased the lead. The diminutive Charlie Hawks, released in the summer by Crystal Palace and now a member of our PASE academy, cut inside from the left and hit a long right foot cross field ball into the path of right winger Tom Haverson. The ex Welling PASE scholar stroked home a beautifully controlled open foot volley that struck both the post and the helpless goalkeeper.

The large digital clock opposite the main stand showed 66 minutes when John Beales and keeper Charlie Wash got in a mix and allowed the ball to bounce over Wash's fingertips. This made for a hectic last 20 minutes when Crawley tried desperately to salvage a draw but the Angels defense held firm. Only downside of an excellent performance was the immaturity of the otherwise brilliant Luke Piscina, who allowed himself to get booked, and nearly sent off, for arguing with referee Richard Goold.
