Epsom & Ewell (U-18) 0-3 TAFC (U-18)
Luke Piscina scored two stunning goals on Wednesday evening to help defeat a very strong Epsom & Ewell side. Still smarting from the previous weeks defeat at the hands of Chessington & Hook the young Angels started in a composed fashion concentrating on their team shape and on their own individual jobs. Confidence grew from this base and Tonbridge were getting a larger share of the game despite the home sides pedigree.
Long range efforts from Mike McKewan and Picina were however the only serious chances created. In the 24th minute Tom Haverson misplaced a backpass and allowed the home side a chance but this was foiled by a combination of pressure from keeper Charlie Wash and Drew Crush. Danny Hunwick who again had an impressive game broke free on the right wing
and hit a beautiful curving cross which just skimmed of the advancing Piscina's head.
Just before the interval, the young striker who is enjoying a rich vein of form, then turned the game with a stunning individual goal. Controlling the ball on his chest and thigh he turned in one movement and volleyed home from 40 yards. Only a minute later in 1st half injury time the same player added a second. This time a soaring header after a brilliant combination of passes
between Charlie Hawks and Tom Creasey, the latter supplying a perfect cross. Warned by the events of last week when a similar lead was squandered, in the second half, the youngsters showed great maturity in resisting the Epsom onslaught. Jon Heath again showed tremendous pace and a powerful left foot. Drew Crush was commanding at the back ably assisted by Mike McKewan who managed to quell his usual impersonation of being a speedboat with no driver tearing around the pitch. Tom Creasey showed glimpses of his wonderful ability on the ball and will be a real asset to the team if he can mix it with good passing.
Sub Liam Bull's endeavor in harassing a defender into an error allowed Piscina to set up Tom Haverson for the Angels third on 76 minutes. The last section of the game was a joy to watch for visiting supporters as Tonbridge completely controlled the game and put together some lovely combinations and moves. Luke Piscina was denied his hat-trick when he made a chance for himself only to see the ball cannon back off the foot of a post.
A great team performance on the night, lets hope we can continue it on Sunday when we travel up to Oxfordshire to Milton Utd for the 1st Qualifying Round of the AXA FA Youth Cup.
