Wednesday, 21 August, 2002: Southern Youth League.
Chessington & Hook (U-18) 5-4 TAFC (U-18)
Making their debut appearance in the Southern Youth League the Angels U18s slipped up in their first league fixture.

Enjoying the improved facilities that the Southern Youth League offers and the higher standard of competition. Tonbridge excelled in the first half cruising into a 3-0 lead within the first 20 minutes. Quality passing by the whole team and lively play by strikers Luke Piscina and Daniel Hunwick allowed the visitors to exert complete authority on the game. Hunwick scored a beautiful goal on 4 mins after Piscina had flicked a header into his path. The second goal, a near post volley, scored by Charlie Hawks was again down to the good work of Piscina and a fine Hunwick cross. Even central defender Darren Pearson got in on the act, scoring with a left foot drive on the 20 minute mark. The Angels defense did have a few scary moments in the first half, being caught square to Chessingtons long ball over the top tactics. However good saving tackles by Jon Heath and John Beales kept the home team at bay.

In the second half although still having some patches of brilliant attacking play the inexperience of our team showed itself with some catastrophic defensive and goalkeeping errors. This was not helped when the outstanding John Beales was strechered off with a nasty knee injury in the 67th minute. Chessington gifted by these goals could not believe their luck as their simple kick and run style paid dividends with 5 second half goals. Liam Bull converted one of many chances that the Angels were still making and should have been taking in the 92 minute. There were many lessons to be learned from this game and progress will only be made if they are absorbed and rectified. However supporters will have been encouraged by the style with which this new team have played.
