Tonbridge Angels Res 0-2 Ashford Town Res
Nothing in life is inevitable, except death, taxes and defeat by Ashford Town, who are fast becoming the Reserves’ bogy team. Once again a match that the Angels should have drawn and could have won ended in defeat, with another major refereeing howler providing the main talking point.
Both teams struggled to get their usual passing game going on a heavy Longmead pitch, both teams created chances and both failed to finish. Lee Cooper and Dexley Fidyk combined well to set up Rick Bryce on 24 minutes but the striker shot straight at the keeper from five yards out. Fidyk curled a freekick just over the bar, and Jimmy Allison also went close. At the other end Matt Clark did well to win a one - on- one as the Tonbridge offside trap was sprung.
Clark was not so lucky on 28 minutes, bringing down the Ashford striker outside the box. But the Angels cleared the freekick and broke away, only for Andy Buchan to put the final shot wide. More Angels pressure resulted in a penalty on 41 minutes, Rick Bryce being brought down by Ashford keeper Burgess. Bryce blasted the penalty against the bar, waited calmly for the soaring rebound and deftly placed the ball into the net. What a shame you cannot have two touches at a penalty.
The second half began as a real battle in the mud, neither team creating a significant chance until the 60th minute, when Bryce touched another Fidyk freekick just wide at the far post. Five minutes later came the first Ashford goal in a sequence begun by the Ashford keeper picking up a backpass. The freekick was blocked for a corner, Allison’s corner was nodded on by Steve Chapman to Bryce who turned and shot...the shot was cleared off the line and a fast break saw Ashford score.
Darren Pearson and Bryce tried to get the Angels back into the match, but just nine minutes later Pearson conceded a penalty. Referee Lynch booked Pearson and then red-carded him to general astonishment. As Pearson walked to the dressing rooms the referee called him back... "Sorry son, I thought that was your second booking....."
Ashford’s Butler sent Clark the wrong way and the match, like the referee, was gone.
