Tonbridge Angels Res 3-1 Epsom & Ewell Res
The fireworks were mostly off the pitch in this encounter, the game being played in excellent spirit against a constant background of flashes and bangs from the assorted celebrations of north Tonbridge. Youth team keeper Jamie Williams can be proud of his debut for the Reserves, who were strengthened by the mountainous Glen Cook and the combative Ryan Briggs.
The two first teamers combined on 25 minutes, with Cook heading home a Briggs freekick to put the Angels a goal ahead and two minutes later Steve Chapman scored a second in similar fashion. With Williams always looking confident in goal and the strong back line of Cook, Chapman, Darren Pearson and John Beales the Angels never looked likely to concede despite a sustained period of Epsom pressure to end the first half.
The visitors opened the second half strongly, bringing a great reaction save from Williams after a shot hit the post and was driven back in on 52 minutes. Lee Cooper put the Angels further ahead and the game firmly beyond Epsom’s reach a minute later, though the visitors never looked outclassed and scored a consolation goal on 76 minutes with a fine strike by Osborne.
Overall this was a solid and entertaining performance by the Angels which brought welcome revenge for a rather streaky defeat away to Epsom earlier in the season. Indeed, but for some inexperience in front of goal the win could have been bigger.
