Tooting & Mitcham Res 5-0 Tonbridge A Res
This Tooting team is a class above the rest of the Division, having put thirteen goals past Fleet Town and six past Angels' recent conquerers Whyteleafe, yet they were flattered by the scoreline in a match which the Angels could easily have drawn with better luck in front of either goal.

Tooting opened the match as champions elect, forcing three corners in the first couple of minutes, the pressure being relieved by Tom Newbery setting up Paul Cardenall for a soaring deep cross which John Sinclair was unlucky to head wide. No such bad luck for Tooting, who scored the first goal after five minutes, Nabil heading home at the far post.

The Angels fought back, Dexley Fidyk putting Lee Cooper through on goal on 14 minutes and Cardenall curling a freekick just wide. Thus Tooting’s second goal on half an hour was a breakaway after a long period of Angels’ pressure, followed a couple of minutes later by their third goal. Tonbridge responded immediately through Cardenall, whose shot was saved by Hill in the Tooting goal. It was typical of the Angels’ luck on the night that Tooting’s fourth goal not only came in the 48th minute of the first half but looked very, very offside.

Dead and buried on paper, the Angels fought back in the second half and more than held their own. Jack Pittaway and Fidyk again were unlucky not to score, and Cardenall saw yet another long range screamer glance agonisingly off the far corner of the crossbar with the keeper completely beaten. Tooting’s final goal didn’t arrive until the 89th minute, by which time we had seen the welcome return to the Angels of former youth player Steve Chapman and more senior experience for young Ross Mills and Drew Crush all of whom performed well against top class opposition.
