Saturday, 19 October, 2002: Suburban League Cup Second Round.
Tonbridge Angels Res 0-2 Ruislip Manor Res
Angels Reserves slithered out of the League Cup with barely a whimper, lacking the experience to rise above a poor team from the North Division of the Suburban League. Indeed, Ruislip's six-foot plus striker Allers was able to score two goals despite failing to win a challenge in the entire match, and spending the last twenty minutes clearly exhausted and hiding from the ball.
Man of the match was probably the referee, Mr T Guy. He arrived at Longmead just five minutes before kick-off having taken the remarkable decision to drive from his home in Crawley to north Tonbridge via East Grinstead, Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge town centres at Saturday lunchtime. Although not helped by the Suburban League's nomination of a Ruislip official as one of his Assistants and certainly not to blame for the result, Mr Guy's handling of the match left much to be desired. John Beales' dismissal will take him out of contention for a first team place as a result of two unremarkable challenges, while unlucky Ben Rainbow walked in the last few seconds of the game as a series of late Ruislip tackles went unpunished amidst a chorus of disbelief from Tonbridge players, officials and supporters. Rainbow's comments were less pungent than most.
Rick Bryce had a goal ruled out for offside by the Ruislip official.
