Tonbridge Angels Res 1-0 Chertsey Town Res
The Angels succeeded in grinding out a win against a team who, on paper, they should have beaten easily and they needed a Rick Bryce penalty to do it.
The first half saw the midfield mostly run by the hardworking Dexley Fidyk. He was unlucky to lose his partner John Sinclair through injury after half an hour, and the lack of an obvious replacement on the bench saw Steve Johns moving up from fullback. On 41 minutes the highlight of the first half arrived, when Bryce was apparently brought down by the grounded Chertsey keeper Smart. What looked an obvious penalty was turned down by referee Murray who ruled that the collision was accidental.
The second half continued in the same vein, with the Angels making little headway against a hardworking Chertsey team who were beginning to look the most likely scorers. On sixty minutes the visitors were unlucky to see a well-driven cross flash across the face of the Angels' goal. Four minutes later the Angels attacking ambitions suffered a further blow when winger Kieran Wilson had to withdraw, the only substitute available being defensive bulwark Simon Dunk. But relief came on 68 minutes when the persistant Bryce was pushed to the ground and finally won a penalty. Showing the coolness of the born striker, young Bryce picked himself up and placed the spot kick past the diving keeper.
By now packed with defensive talent, the Angels closed the game down and apart from one scare in injury time never really looked likely to lose the three points.
