| Tuesday, 17 September, 2002: Kent Intermediate Cup. Tonbridge Angels Res 2-0 Margate Reserves The young Angels' passing game finally clicked into gear on an excellent Longmead surface on Tuesday night against Conference club Margate's second team. More experienced but less mobile, Margate had no answer to the slick Angels and the final score failed to reflect the home team's dominance. Constantly supplied by wide players Kieran Wilson and Paul Cardenall, strikers John Allman and Richard Bryce were unlucky not to score, but their movement and frequent attempts on goal allowed the Angels to strike from deep. Fullback John Beales hit the bar on 5 minutes and Paul Cardenall shot just wide on 15 minutes, before Cardenall opened the scoring on 32 minutes with a wicked dipping shot from the left touchline, his third of the season from that position. Dexley Fidyk and John Sinclair were both unlucky not to score before half time. The Angels emerged for the re-start ready to move up a gear. Margate's Belsey miskicked in front of an open goal on 26 minutes, and Todd forced the one save of the evening from an increasingly effective Matt Clark on 39 minutes but otherwise the visitors were allowed to contribute little to an entertaining second half. Fidyk scrambled the ball home for the second goal on 57 minutes as Margate desperately held the Angels at bay. Darren Pearson curled a thirty yard screamer just wide of the top corner, whilst Allman and Bryce can look back in wonder at an evening when they simply could not score. Vojtech Brozik made a promising debut up front, replacing Bryce for the last fifteen minutes and combining well with Mannie Neville. Brozik was unlucky to be booked by a referee who failed to allow for the Czech lad's limited command of English. Report by: Robin Peterson. |
