Tuesday, 8 April, 2003: Dr Martens League Eastern Division.
Tonbridge Angels 4-0 Erith & Belvedere
Tonbridge looked very good tonight, especially going forward, Sam Tydeman and Peter Overton the unsung heroes in midfield with all of the play passing through Overton. Ryan Royston was a rock throughout and Barr, Emblen and Powell showed good understanding between each other.

The first goal came form the penalty spot after an alleged hand-ball on the front post from a corner, Hamid Barr slotting home in the bottom left corner. The second came from a well worked set-piece, Barr laying the ball left for Tydeman to hit a rasping shot into the bottom corner. The third came just before half-time after a superb cross-field ball from Barr found Powell on the opposite side of the pitch, his inch-perfect cross was poked home by Emblen. Before half-time Lloyd Hume nearly added a fourth after a long run from the middle of the park, he played a one-two with Emblen and hit a low shot that was deflected and saved well by the keeper.

The pace slowed down a little in the second half but Tonbridge always had the ability to turn the screw, this proved mid-way through the second half when Tydeman played in Barnes down the right hand channel whose cross was neatly converted by Powell into the bottom left-hand corner. Tonbridge sat back a little from then on but the most amusing moment of the game came when Erith's Steve Portway was clean through on goal with only Reynolds to beat, he screwed his shot a long way wide! Walker's descion vindicated!

Erith keeper (Clark Hunt) pulled off two good saves before the end. One from subsitute Barnes from outside of the penalty area that looked to be dipping under the bar, Hunt moving smartly to push over the bar. The second coming moments from the end Piscina being put through after good play in midfield from Tydeman, Overton and Barnes. Luke was close to lifting the ball over the advancing keeper but he saved well. All in all a very good performance - the players worked hard for each other and there always seemed to be one or more players around the ball when the opposition had possession. A stronger test awaits on Saturday against Kings Lynn but if we play attractive football like tonight the result won't be in question!
