Saturday, 29 March, 2003: Dr Martens League Eastern Division.
Tonbridge Angels 1-0 Histon
A spectacular goal just before the break secured a deserved victory for the Angels in this entertaining game at Longmead Stadium.
Paul Emblen fed Hamid Barr after great work down the left, and Barr's 20-yard screamer gave Ian Hulyer in the Histon goal no chance. Hulyer had already pulled off fine saves from Emblen, Barr and Ray Powell in a first half largely dominated by incisive attacking play from Tonbridge which constantly stretched the visitors defence. Histon's only real opportunity came on the half-hour, Peter Munns sidefooting wide when it seemed easier to score after being set up by Louis Farrington and James Rowe.
Tonbridge continued to dominate after the break, but Histon came right back into the game after a double substitution brought on Ian Cambridge and Neil Coburn in the 64th minute. Rowe clipped the top of the Tonbridge bar soon afterwards, and Gareth Jones fluffed a great chance after being put clean through on Angels 'keeper Tony Reynolds.
Luke Piscina and Powell went close for Tonbridge after more fine approach play, but the last ten minutes was all Histon. A shot from skipper Jamie Barker deflected inches wide, then Farrington blazed wide when well placed after a scramble in the Tonbridge goalmouth - but the Angels held on for a win which ends Histon's lingering hopes of a promotion place.
