| Saturday, 1 March, 2003: Dr Martens League Eastern Division. Tonbridge Angels 1-2 Burnham Despite dominating most of this contest at Longmead Stadium, Tonbridge were undone by two defensive howlers early in the second half which gift-wrapped a rare away win for the visitors. The Angels recent slump continues, despite Manager Alan Walker publicly reading his players the riot act in midweek. A scoreless first half was all Tonbridge, with Hamid Barr and Ryan Royston going close for the home side. Walker introduced ex-Wycombe star Paul Emblen after the break to add some much needed experience and goal threat for the Angels. The move immediately paid off, Barr firing Emblen's expert lay off past Burnham 'keeper Danny Honey. Royston then flashed a header just over from a free kick as the Angels looked to extend the lead. That was the signal for the Angels defence to go missing. Terry Davies claimed the equaliser, toe-poking the ball under 'keeper Tony Reynolds at the far post after Tonbridge failed to clear an innocuous looking free kick. Danny Tingley's attempted goal-line clearance merely helped the ball in. A horrible mix-up between Reynolds and Paul Ainsworth left Arron Lennon to walk the ball into an empty net for Burnham's second, and leading scorer Michael Bartley missed a great chance for a third immediately afterwards, blazing wide when clean through. Driven by the tireless prompting of Peter Overton in midfield, the Angels piled on the pressure in the last half-hour but it just wasn't to be their day. Nick Barnes and Barr spurned golden opportunities to salvage a point for Tonbridge near the end, and Burnham hung on for a slightly fortunate victory. Report by Tony Browne. |
