Saturday, 21 December, 2002: Dr Martens League Eastern Division.
Tonbridge Angels 0-0 Chatham Town
An afternoon of frustration for the Angels, who were unable to breach a stubborn Chatham rearguard despite dominating the game from start to finish.
Tonbridge spent long periods of the game camped in the Chatham half, but couldn't find the touch of quality or luck needed to make the breakthrough. Town 'keeper Kevin Fewell was out quickly to narrow the angle and save brilliantly from Peter Overton in the 12th minute, and pulled off another fine save shortly afterwards when a superb ball from Overton put Nick Barnes through on goal. Chatham's only threat of the game came midway through the opening half, Tom Binks slicing wide when well placed. The Angels lost influential midfielder Steve Searle with an injury after 25 minutes but the traffic continued to be all in Chatham's direction. Joe Radford remained a virtual spectator while Fewell pulled off another good save from Steve Portway's cross shot, and the Chatham goal somehow survived intact until the break.
The pattern continued in the second half. Angels manager Alan Walker used all his substitutes in an effort to force the breakthrough, but it just wouldn't come. Fewell made two more near post saves from Portway late on - but Chatham, for whom Andy and Danny Larkin were both superb at the heart of the defence, would not be denied.
