Saturday, 12 October, 2002: Dr Martens League Eastern Division.
Tonbridge Angels 2-0 Stamford
Second half strikes from Steve Portway and Mark Greatorex comfortably despatched the challenge of a lacklustre Stamford side at Longmead Stadium. The Daniels came into the game looking to arrest a slump in form which had seen them drop from League Leaders after five games to tenth at start of play, but were only able to muster a single effort on the Tonbridge goal - and that in the 86th minute.

Tonbridge looked the sharper in a first half where Stamford failed to take advantage of the strong breeze in their favour, but neither side really troubled the opposition 'keeper.

A nasty clash in a 50-50 challenge between in-form Angels striker Brendon Cass and Stamford defender Dennis Rhule after just five minutes saw both players substituted after lengthy treatment on the field - it caused a broken leg for Cass and Rhule with a head injury. Angels central defender Ryan Royston put a free header wide from Nick Barnes' free kick soon after the resumption, and Tonbridge sub Greatorex shot just over from 20 yards after a classy pulldown and turn.

The pattern continued in the second half. Daniels 'keeper Darren Horrigan dived to his right to save from Mike Azzopardi on the hour, but was beaten on 67 minutes when Angels skipper Peter Overton intercepted a pass and put Azzopardi away down the right. The wing-back's cross was headed in at the far post by veteran striker Portway.

Near misses from Greatorex and Portway (twice) followed as the Angels looked for the clincher - but it didn't come until the 89th minute, when a two on one breakaway saw man of the match Greatorex slide the ball under Horrigan after being played in perfectly by Nick Barnes.
