Saturday, 5 October, 2002: FA Trophy Preliminary Round.
Croydon Athletic 0-3 Tonbridge Angels
Tonbridge won their second FA Trophy match in 20 years in commanding fashion, beating a comfortably inferior side 3-0 with goals from Nick Barnes, Steve Portway and Brendon Cass.

The match began with a lengthy delay after a clash of heads between Glen Cooke and 'Rams' defender Tony Quinton. When Cooke was again injured in the ninth minute he had to be brought off and was replaced by the energetic Nick Barnes.

The first half was a story of missed chances. Brendon Cass had a shot tipped wide after a through-ball from Barnes, who came close himself with a 30 yard shot which was saved well by Robert Frankland. The best chance came on 32 minutes when Steve Portway was clear through on goal but passed to Cass, who miscued his shot facing an open goal. It took until first half injury time for the deadlock to be broken, Nick Barnes charging down a clearance and then beating Frankland to make it 1-0.

Tonbridge kept pushing straight after the break and Portway got his first goal in a month on 53 minutes. Craig Roser found Cass on the left, who rounded a defender and passed the ball across the penalty area for Portway to smash the ball home off the crossbar.

Four minutes later and it was 3-0. Danny Tingley burst through the midfield and passed to Kenny Pavey on the right, whose cross was headed over Frankland's head by Cass.

Mike Azzopardi and Scott Saunders were brought on mid-way through the second half and Tonbridge refused to ease the tempo. Azzopardi was unfortunate to see a fierce shot cleared off the goal line before Ryan Briggs blasted the rebound over the bar.

Barnes and Azzopardi both had further chances but were still to be denied, however the Angels go on to meet Maidenhead United in the First Round.
