Saturday, 28 September, 2002: Dr Martens League Eastern Division.
Corby Town 1-4 Tonbridge Angels
Corby has never traditionally been one of our favourite visits of the season, and after spending an hour in the most depressing of club bars before emerging to see Peter Overton head into his own goal in the second minute, we would have been forgiven for clambering back on to the coach and going straight home.

It took 20 minutes for Tonbridge to recover from the shock, looking unlikely to create any goalscoring chances, but soon began to take control of the game, inspired by the commanding Lloyd Hume. Kenny Pavey had the best chances, a 25 yard shot being tipped wide early on and then shooting over after 32 minutes.

On 36 minutes the scores were level as Ryan Briggs drove a free kick straight at the Corby goalkeeper. Ryan Royston was on hand to tap in from the shortest of distances.

Tonbridge were obviously given some stern words by Alan Walker at half-time, as they dominated the second period. On 48 minutes a poor pass in defence was accepted by Steve Portway, who found Overton in space on the left and he calmly sidefooted the ball past the goalkeeper.

Portway was unlucky not to make it 3-1 two minutes later, having a shot tipped over the bar, before he played his part in the third goal on 67 minutes. A long kick from Allan Lewis (replacing the injured Radford in goal) was flicked on by the head of Brendon Cass to leave Portway through on goal with only the keeper to beat. Instead, Portway placed the ball back into the path of Cass who scored his seventh goal in five games.

By now Corby were in disarray and the Angels could easily have scored two or three more goals, such was their domination. Another good passing move culminated in Pavey shooting just wide on 82 minutes, and three minutes later a similar move saw Mark Greatorex unfortunate not to score. A Craig Roser cross was then nearly flicked home by a Corby defender!

The fourth goal came in injury time to complete the win, Overton crouching low at the near post to head home from Briggs' corner.
