Saturday, 21 September, 2002: Dr Martens League Eastern Division.
Tonbridge Angels 2-2 Dorchester Town
It was referee Gavin Ward who set the officious tone for the match in the 8th minute. Ward booked Magpies defender Michael White for an innocuous challenge and then proceeded to warn Matt Holmes and the Dorchester dug out against complaining. Ward seemed more interested in dissent than bad challenges, this was shown up no better than when Tonbridge goalkeeper Joe Radford was hacked down by Martin Shepherd but no card was shown.

Craig Roser came close to giving the Angels the lead in the 20th minute, Steve Portway putting him through on the left only to be challenged by a defender, but the home side's protests for a penalty were ignored. Instead it was Dorchester who took the lead, Matt Groves volleying home from the edge of the area after latching on to a poor headed clearance by Ryan Royston. Three minutes later the lead was almost doubled when Shepherd had a shot well stopped by Radford.

Tonbridge then had two golden opportunities to level the score. On 37 minutes Portway, still struggling to find his scoring form, sliced a shot wide with only the Magpies keeper Mark Ormerod to beat. Two minutes later Ormerod managed to get a hand to a shot from Nick Barnes just before Angels debutant Kenny Pavey hit a long range lob that only just went over the bar.

The Angels put their finishing boots on at half time and raced out of the blocks from the start. Two minutes into the second half and Kenny Pavey's cross was expertly headed over the head of the stranded Ormerod by Brendon Cass. It only took another two minutes before Tonbridge were 2-1 up. A free kick on the right (for which Nick Barnes was bizarrely booked for being fouled) from Roser was flicked on by Cass and Royston directed the ball into the net.

Stunned by the double strike, Dorchester fought back and Joe Radford had to be at full stretch to palm a Justin Keeler free-kick round the post. On 64 minutes the score was 2-2 as Keeler's bouncing volley eluded the Tonbridge defence, but not Matt Groves who directed it home with a glancing header.

Dorchester were reduced to 10 men late on in the game. Jamie Brown was booked for a rash challenge on Mark Greatorex on 83 minutes, before a similar challenge on Peter Overton four minutes later led to him being shown the red card.
